Phil works as a space analyst in his day job and then does space art in his spare time.
For the moment, I use Winsor & Newton Artist's Acrylic paints together with Winsor & Newton Designers Gouache paints. To apply the paints, I use a variety of brushes. These get abused thoroughly, and I have no preferred brand. I do use Japanese hake brushes to blend large areas like skies and such. When I finish painting, I use Prismacolor pencils and an assortment of pastels to add detail.
I loosely sketch some forms on a piece of paper as I brainstorm ideas for a painting. Once I have some sort of idea where I'm going, I begin by painting the background. I then add objects, attempting to develop an interesting composition and some degree of balance. I like the loneliness and vastness of space, and try to capture this from time to time. My paintings always turn out radically different than what I had intended. In this way, my paintings often surprise me in the end.
My favorite thing to paint is the Earth as seen from space.
