Antares Target Launch Time at WFF
17
2013
We will be there, with front row seats, to view the following launch:
************************************************************************************
WALLOPS ISLAND, Va. — Orbital Sciences Corp. completed roll-out of the first fully-integrated Antares rocket to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport Pad-0A at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility on Saturday, April 6. Orbital has confirmed an April 17 target launch date for the rocket test flight with a planned liftoff of 5 p.m. EDT. Orbital is testing the Antares rocket under NASA’s Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) program. NASA initiatives like COTS are helping develop a robust U.S. commercial space transportation industry with the goal of achieving safe, reliable and cost-effective transportation to and from the space station and low-Earth orbit. For more information on the launch, Wallops, and NASA initiatives like COTS, see:http://www.nasa.gov/centers/wallops/missions/antares.html.

Battle of the Rockets!
06
2013
The Battle of the Rockets is sponsored by AIAA, Praxis and The Federation of Galaxy Explorers to bring challenge, excitement and applied science to the world of model rocketry competitions.
Planetary Rover Event
Design a rocket and mars rover to launch to at least 1000 feet and deploy the mars rover. The mars rover must be fully contained in the rocket before being deployed. Once deployed, the mars rover must return to the ground safely. Once landed, the mars rover shall release a bright colored marker that can be easily found. The marker must be placed at the point of landing. It cannot be tossed, shot, or projected beyond its landing location. Once released, the rover must then travel 10 feet and release a second marker. The rover then must turn 90 degrees in either direction and travel 10 feet. Travel must be completed within ten minutes. Time starts at the time of landing. Method of travel is up to the team.
Astro-Egg Lander
Design and build a rocket and a lander to be launched to 1200 feet and deploy the lander. The lander must contain one large grade A hen egg and return to earth safely without damaging the egg. The method of descent control shall not use parachutes or para-foils. The descent rate must remain under 30 feet/second.
Target Altitude
Design and build a rocket to reach as close to 1700 feet as possible using a G motor. Two successful flights must be made out of three attempts. The score is the absolute difference of the altitude reading and 1700 feet. Qualifying altitudes must be between 1300 and 2100 feet. Both successful flight results are added together for the final score. The lowest score wins.

Battle of the Rockets
05
2012
The Battle of the Rockets Competition is designed to get students interested in engineering and science with an exciting hands-on competition. The competition has multiple levels providing a continuous challenge for students as their skill levels grow. Each year a new more complex event will be included in the competition.
Engineering Challenges:
- High School – College: Target Altitude
- High School – College: Egg Saucer
- Collegiate: Planetary Lander. Preliminary Design Reviews and Critical Design Reviews are built into the Planetary Lander event. This increases the application and understanding of the engineering design process. Our engineers, working professionals, meet with each team during each review and give feedback to improve engineering strategy.
