Galaxy Ball 2015
05
2015
The Galaxy Ball is at the Westin Arlington Gateway!
801 N Glebe Road, Arlington, VA 22203
The Federation of Galaxy Explorers is incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication within the STEM community: teachers, parents, and industry innovators creatively provide funding and resources to expand the minds of our youth, and encourage space education and innovation. We are honored to pursue these goals alongside the greatest minds of our generation. For almost a decade we’ve held the Galaxy Ball to honor the inspiring leaders and fantastic volunteers of space education. It is with their help we create a scientifically literate population, prepare our youth for the expanding demand in STEM-related careers, and allow children to chase their dreams into the next galaxy.
The Galaxy Ball is our biggest fundraising event of the year: funds raised at the gala enable the continuation of the Galaxy Explorers’ mission for the following school year. Without your support, we would be unable to provide fun, affordable, STEM education to the growing Explorer community. All proceeds support the Federation of Galaxy Explorers’ mission to the community!
Every year the Galaxy Ball hosts rocket scientists, astronauts, defense and government employees; all committed to advancing space education over cosmic cocktails, dinner, and dancing! We also host an exciting Silent Auction and Raffle throughout the night. After dinner, the awards ceremony reminds us how important fostering the interest in excitement in space is, recognizing contributors to the fields of space education and leadership, and recognizes our outstanding Explorers, Mission Team Leaders, and volunteers.

Battle of the Rockets 2015
28
2015
Brought to you by: The Federation of Galaxy Explorers
and , Tripoli Central Virginia #25 as your RSO.
Bring on the Battle of the Rockets! A challenge, a thrill, cash prizes and a whole lot of fun.
Planetary Rover Event –
Design a rocket and mars rover to launch to at least 1000 feet and deploy the mars rover. The mars rover must be fully contained in the rocket before being deployed. Once deployed, the mars rover must return to the ground safely. Once landed, the mars rover shall release a bright colored marker that can be easily found. The marker must be placed at the point of landing. It cannot be tossed, shot, or projected beyond its landing location. Once released, the rover must then travel 10 feet and release a second marker. The rover then must turn 90 degrees in either direction and travel 10 feet. Travel must be completed within ten minutes. Time starts at the time of landing. Method of travel is up to the team.
Due to the complexity of this event, PDR and CDR documents will be required. Templates and instructions will be added soon.
Spinning –
Design and build a payload that will be deployed at a minimum of 1400 feet and return using auto-gyro recovery method. No parachutes or streamers or other recovery method is allowed. The descent rate shall not exceed 20 feet/sec. Design a rocket to launch the payload to a minimum of 1400 feet using no larger than an I motor. The payload shall transmit telemetry to a ground station in real time.
Target Altitude Event –
Design and build a rocket to reach as close to 1500 feet as possible using a G motor. Two successful flights must be made out of three attempts. The score is the absolute difference of the altitude reading and 1625 feet. Qualifying altitudes must be between 1300 and 1900 feet. Both successful flight results are added together for the final score. The lowest score wins.
• Registration must be post marked by no later than October 30, 2014
• Preliminary Design Review (PDR) document must be submitted by December 1, 2014 — see rules
• Critical Design Review (CDR) document must be submitted by February 1, 2015 — see rules
• Launch on Saturday March 28, 2015 at Battle Park.

Our longtime supporter, Horizon Strategies Group is helping us get into the holiday spirit and beat the December chill by throwing us a fundraiser at Shelly’s Back Room! On December 3rd, join us for libations and cigars as we celebrate the progress we’ve made in 2014. Galaxy Explorers’ friends and family will gather from 5- 8 and toast the upcoming year.
We fund our programs by private or corporate sponsorships and donations. Our dollars go to provide low-cost experiences to our youth. Often, we provide hardware, such as telescopes, rockets, robots and opportunities to children and mission teams who would otherwise not be able to participate. We do this because we know it is important to inspire our next generation. Please consider joining us, and you will provide an opportunity for children to reach for a space-based STEM career. All proceeds from the event directly benefit Galaxy Explorer programs.
